EXPERIENCE YOU CAN TRUST

Our Founder
First-Hand Experience
The landscape of Antarctica demands more than a curious mind. Apart from thorough research, expertise and real skin-in-the-game is what makes us stand out.
Our founder, Rohan Prakash, has travelled to Antarctica 7 TIMES because each journey reveals something different. What works in theory versus reality or which ships handle ice best.
Actual insight comes from experience; from being cold, awed, humbled and choosing to return.
So when you ask
“What’s the best way for me to experience Antarctica on an expedition?”

Travel Basics
How do you get to Antarctica?
Most trips depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, crossing the Drake Passage. You can choose to fly or sail the passage.
What is the best month to visit Antarctica?
The Antarctic travel season runs from November to March.
- November - Early December
Pristine landscapes, fewer visitors, Penguin courtship
- Late December - January
Peak wildlife activity, Penguin chicks, milder temperatures
- February - March
Whale sightings, dramatic ice formations, fewer crowds
What kind of wildlife can be seen during my travel dates?
Wildlife varies by month but may include:
- Penguins: Gentoo, Chinstrap, Adélie (All season)
- Seals: Weddell, Leopard, Crabeater, Elephant seals
- Whales: Humpback, Minke, Orca (mainly Feb-Mar)
- Birdlife: Skua, Petrels, Albatross
Sightings depend on timing, location, and natural conditions.
What are the weather and sea conditions like?
Temperatures: Approximately –5°C to 5°C during summer
Daylight: Can be around 20-24 hours during the season
Sea conditions: Can vary from calm to rough, especially during ocean crossings
Weather is unpredictable and part of the true expedition experience.
Is there any age limit for the expedition?
There is no strict upper age limit for Antarctic expeditions; participation is based on medical fitness and mobility rather than age. Most cruise lines allow children aged 10 years and above, though minimum age requirements may vary from one expedition operator to another.
Are there any medical or fitness requirements?
Guests must be in overall good health, able to walk on uneven terrain and embark/disembark Zodiacs with assistance; a medical questionnaire (in some cases, a doctor’s clearance) is required.
How many landings are typically done in Antarctica?
Most expeditions aim for 1-2 shore landings per day, weather and ice conditions permitting. Flexibility is key, as plans may change based on safety and environmental factors.
What kind of clothing should I bring?
Layering is essential:
- Thermal base layers
- Insulating mid-layers (fleece/down)
- Waterproof, windproof outer layers
- Warm gloves, hat, scarf, and sunglasses
Good cold-weather preparation greatly enhances comfort.
Are expedition Boots and Parkas provided?
Most expeditions provide waterproof expedition boots and often a polar parka but travellers should confirm inclusions before departure.
What is included in the expedition cost?
Generally included:
- Accommodation onboard
- All meals during the expedition
- Zodiac excursions and shore landings
- Expert-led lectures and activities
Items like international flights, insurance, gratuities, or personal expenses may be excluded.
Do I need a visa for Antarctica?
No visa is required for Antarctica itself. However, travellers must meet visa and entry requirements for transit countries (such as Argentina or Chile).
Can Antarctica expeditions be customized?
Scheduled departures follow fixed itineraries, but our Unwild Exclusive Trips are tailor made to our needs while remaining IAATO-compliant.
